Colorful Elegance
An Interview with Betsy Allen
Where did you grow up? What influences did you have growing up that made you become a designer? Tell us a bit about your business:
I like to stage houses for resale, change and decorate. I like to design interior and exterior spaces. What would you consider your design style? Elegant, comfortable, inviting, classic without being stuffy. Where did you study? In England – I studied fine and decorative arts in London.
How do you define "home"? Home is a comfortable, elegant haven surrounded by wonderful books and treasures. What are some questions you ask your clients before you begin a project? Are you afraid of color? What can you tell about a person when you walk in a room? How confident they are – how they carry themselves.
Who are some designers that have influenced your work? Love Bill Blass, Balenciaga – fashion is a big influence on my work. Architects too – I love William Bottomley, George Washington Smith and John Russell Pope’s work.
What are some trends we should look out for in design? Any particular colors? We’ve had a lot of neutrals. Color is coming back – chocolate brown walls and a hot pink sofa. Comfort is a big thing.
How does your home design reflect in what you wear? Elegant, comfort, classic, and fun shoes. Good accessories are fantastic. I’m a real “Gringa-Latina.” Who is your dream client and why? Someone who is well-traveled, well-read and know what they like. They can’t be afraid of color and are able to make decisions easily.
