Inspirations An Interview with Robin Baron
Where did you grow up? What influences did you have growing up that made you become a designer? I didn’t have any childhood influences. I looked to find my own way. I wanted to find my own voice. What would you consider your design style? I don’t have a particular, specific “design style”. My style ranges from contemporary to transitional. It can be urban, as well as traditional. I want to help the client live more fully. I try to see through their eyes, to elevate their taste and enhance their lifestyle. How long have you been designing? Where did you study? I’ve been designing for 19 years. I studied at UCLA and then Parsons School of Design. I started as a fashion designer with sportswear. It was during the time Calvin Klein and Armani were launching their sportswear lines.
How do you define "home"? Home is a place where someone can take a deep breath and feel uplifted and inspired. What are some questions you ask your clients before you begin a project? Before beginning a project, I take my new client on an exploratory journey. It is an intellectual process where we spend some time together, in order to discover their visceral reactions to what they see in fabrics, furniture, rugs, etc. It is a trip about inspirations and their responses, as well as finding out about their comfort level.
What can you tell about a person when you walk in a room? I can tell how people feel about themselves. If they are happy, centered, busy, distracted, organized. I try to tell how they live, their lifestyle. Are they home a lot? Do they like to cook? Are they out a lot? Who are some designers that have influenced your work, and how? I am inspired by everything, not just particular people. I get my inspiration from different looks, be it while clothes shopping, or looking through magazines and books. My staff and I meet weekly to talk about our inspirations. I encourage them to bring in clippings that resonate with them.
What are some trends we should look out for in design? Any particular colors? Anything goes! Metallics. Animal prints used in unusual ways. Ceilings are very important. Orange is a big trend now. It goes with so many other colors – reds, purples, greens.
How does your home design reflect in what you wear? The accessories I wear reflect in how I design. I like to wear antique jewelry, accessories with a twist. I like to mix it up a bit. My style reflects in my home design in the way I like to think “out of the box”. I’ll mix contemporary with antiques. I like to do the unexpected and be a bit eclectic. Who is your dream client and why? The accessories I wear reflect in how I design. I like to wear antique jewelry, accessories with a twist. I like to mix it up a bit.
