Where did you grow up?
Queens, New York

What influences did you have growing up that made you become a designer?
My Italian and Russian grandparents, my working class roots, visiting Manhattan when I was young and naïve, TV, Film and my first job with Robert K. Lewis Design Associates.

What would you consider your design style?
Modernist with a Japanese and Italian renaissance influence.

How long have you been designing?
34 years

Where did you study?
Parsons School of Design

How do you define "home"?
Sanctuary – a retreat from the world.

What are some questions you ask your clients before you begin a project?
Where have you traveled that you love? What films or theater do you respond to? What is your favorite food? Book?

What can you tell about a person when you walk in a room?
What his or her personal style might be, perhaps his or her family ethnic background, color preferences, if they have a sense of humor and how truly confident they are.

Who are some designers that have influenced your work?
Andrea Palladio for his extraordinary sense of architectural balance and harmony. John Saladino for his love of history and wonderful eclectic sensibilities. Ralph Lauren and his extraordinary vision and attention to detail.

What are some trends we should look out for in design? Any particular colors?
Comfort and luxury with tremendous attention to detail, new high tech fabrics and a sense of tranquility in the home.
I admire the influence of the military for color – ivory, khaki and olive green and would love to see more of this palette in the world.

How does your home design reflect in what you wear?
Tremendously. I like a minimal and tailored/classic environment that is steeped in tradition and history. I like to draw from my love for Japanese and Italian culture, design and food as influences for the way I dress and the way I design.

Who is your dream client and why?
Someone who is confident and communicates clearly. A client should bring a lot to the table in terms of ideas and who has influenced them. Someone who knows the difference between trust and questioning every selection. Someone who can identify the directors, authors and politicians they admire most. Someone who likes a slice of pizza and a coke as well as the most refined plate of sushi and exquisite subtle glass of sake. Someone who has traveled and is open to going on an exciting journey designing his or her home.
