Event Design An Interview with Stylist, Hal Parent
Where did you grow up? What influences did you have growing up that made you become a stylist? What would you consider your design style? I’ve always been visual in an all encompassing kind of way - from interiors to clothing, to Christmas cards, to invitations. Everything but food. I study people’s lifestyles. I get my influences from window shopping, magazines, tv. I don’t think travel is important. How long have you been designing?
Forever. Where did you study? Chamberlain Junior College and the University of Maryland. I started in retail in 1996 and came to Greenwich from New York via Saks Fifth Avenue when they opened on the Avenue.
How do you define "party"? Life is a party. What are some questions you ask your clients before you begin a project? I like to know the clients’ likes and dislikes. Do they have a theme in mind? Are there any particular colors they’d like to use? What can you tell about a person when you walk in a room? You can tell a lot by what they have on. Also – what their house looks like.
Who are some designers that have influenced your work? Michael Kors is Americana right now. Herb Ritts and his photography, Vincent Wolfe and Jeffrey Bilhuber.
What are some trends we should look out for in design? Any particular colors? I’m all about the non-trend. The Berkin bag, a Cartier watch. I like the classics and I stick with them.
Do you prefer “theme” parties? Or do you prefer more open ended parties? I like to go with the client’s preference. I like open ended themes. Nothing too specific. I aim to please – so I’m happy to work with what you have. Do you prefer dressy or casual parties? Dressy or casual – no matter – it’s all an attitude. I prefer dressy for women. Men around here tend to go with blazers, no matter what. I like to wear a tuxedo with jeans.
People are always looking for ideas for centerpieces. Do you have any suggestions for centerpieces that aren’t flowers? I like to use common objects. The more you use – the more impactful it is. For example: on a long table – line up 50 champagne glasses with a little water and put fifty oranges on top of them. Or fill containers with colorful candy. It makes a real visual impact. >Tell us about your dream dinner party, who are the guests? Princess Grace, Madonna, Princess Diana, Jackie O, Diana Ross and Julie Andrews.
